  • vray sky show up as a strange pink hue when set as a viewport background

Migrating over from mental ray - so not sure correct procedure.

I'm creating a vray sun which create a vray sky... rendered through the camera it looks fine, but the viewport background looks really odd.

    Max 2015.

Also, what is the done thing for exposure controls?

I guess Max is moving to vray style - per camera exposure control.

but what if I want to use a perspective viewport with exposure? - is that the global exposure control?

    Will cameras override that?

The sky looks funky in which way, in the viewport?
It ought to look pure white, or thereabout, given perspective views have no exposure.

On the topic of exposure, you have a global exposure control for the views which aren't a physical camera, while each physcam will override them with its own (unless "exposure" is unchecked, in which case it's back to the global control, if present.).

Yes, there is a global override for the exposure so you can easily render from perspective/ortho viewports. Or if you just want to override the exposure of your cameras. It's in the "Physical Camera Exposure Control" in the Environment window. Just tick the option that says "Ignore Per-Camera Exposure (Use Global)" and then set the "Exposure for Non-Physical Cameras:" to an appropriate EV value (this will depend on the intensity of your lights".

As for why the sky preview in the viewport looks odd - I have no idea. I never really preview my Vray Sky in the viewport. I just tried it but it shows as just solid dark beige color. Not sure if it's possible to preview it right in the viewport or not.

Thanks Alex. But I can't see that option.

Here's an image showing up what I have.

At this point I'm just using normal cameras and using global exposure - which I will change when I get past the rough animatic stage.

I either get bright white or purple hue. If I tumble the perpsective view the purple hue changes a little, so it looks like it's at least taking some data from the cloud.

nb: it renders correctly so this is definitely a viewport issue.

Would it be possible to send us that scene for investigation?

            Here's the file

            https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/...everywhere.max

I see the sky as purple - like the lyrics to 1999 by Prince - who I like - but I don't want all my scenes to look like they are inspired by him.

The option that Alex_M mentioned is only available in Max 2016 where Autodesk introduces its new PhysicalCamera.
As for the pink sky issue, it seems that the Process Backgorund and Environment Maps option changes the exposure of the Background in the viewport. If you disable it the viewport should preview correctly.

I don't know if you actually tried that yourself - but on my machine it then displays the entire background as pure white!

Yes it does, my fault. Unfortunately this might be hard to fix issue and I am not sure if we will get to that soon.
