  • Stuck on prepass / can´t cancel Render

    Hi there,

for a while now I´ve had a very annoying issue and I just wanna confirm its not just me:

Sometimes, MAYBE its always the first time I hit render after opening a scene, the rendering doesn´t start, its just getting stuck on prepass (doesn´t seem to matter if Its just prepass from SSS Material or LC from GI) and doesn´t actually start the rendering.
The dumb thing ist, that I can´t even cancel the rendering, only way out of it is killing 3ds max via taskmanager. It gives me an error message saying the program is waiting for an input, at which point I can switch over and at least save my work before it then proceeds to close max.
Most times it seems to render fine after opening the project the next time.
It also only seems to only happen when I´m using the vray frame buffer.

The only other idea I have is, that its somehow connected to our server, where all project data is being saved.

Is this maybe a bug that already got fixed or has anybody else experienced this?

I´m having a hard time troubleshooting it, since It doesn´t always happen and I can´t pinpoint it to as specific scene.

I had this problem very recently with displacement modifier applied to a very large object. I couldn't stop the render even if I clicked cancel/stop immediately after clicking render. I waited for 4-5 min without the render stopping and the only way to stop it was killing 3dsmax.exe as you mentioned. When I revised the displacement settings of that particular object and optimized them, the problem went away. Can you disable displacement from Global Switches and see how it goes?

Yeah, I had problems with Vraydisplacement in the past, but AFAIR this seems to happen to all kinds of scenes, with an without vraydisplacement.
But i might be wrong, I´ll check next time it happens, if there wars any displacement in the scene.

When the issue appears again would it be possible to pack the entire scene and send it over for investigation?

          Hi there,

since I can´t really figure out on which scenes it happens, I think it would make more sense if I try to recreate that issue with a simple scene, when I get the time to do some more troubleshooting. I already have a strong feeling that it is somehow network connected, I guess a bug that wouldn´t let the rendering progress would have been reported by now at least a couple of times...
