This has happened to me often, but it is so odd, I keep forgetting about it and keep getting struck by it. I have been working with a large scene, over 2GB and thought that was a factor, but I just recreated the problem in an empty scene.
To create a crash:
1. Open new copy of max
2. Open render setup and click settings.
3. Change items like the bucket sizes and hit tab to get to the next field.
4. You may need to navigate around with tab and a little bit to create the crash
5. Something about the act of hitting tab to get to another field is freezing the UI. It happens to me consistently with the bucket adjustments, every time after hitting tab to get to the next parameter... a habit from years of programming. My coworker recreated the bug by adjusting the render size and bucket size and general tabbing around the render setup dialogue.
4. When it freezes from the tab bug, Max will white out and lock up indefinitely.
Makes no sense and is not absolutely predictable, but if you tab around enough it will happen. I haven't figured out the exact logic of the crash or the factor that forces it to happen, but it happens quite often.
