  • Alembic and SSS

    Hi,

i got some problems and have no idea what to do about it, so I hope you can give me some clues how to fix this.

I am exporting a Figure from DAZ Studio 4.8 with the Alembic exporter (plugin). To have more details, I check the "Prevent Subdivision Surfaces" checkbox. Then I import the Figure into 3ds Max 2016 and set the subdivision detail of the Open Subdiv Modifier to 2 to get the geometry details back. That's working quite well. Now I can manipulate the scene and do stuff with it because in the viewport I see only the base mesh and before rendering I set the subdiv level to 2 and want to render. I've created a basic HDRI setup.
Now when I apply a material with SSS like the VRaySkinMtl or the VRayFastSSS2, the figure renders all black and glossy. To make it simple as possible I've assigned the VRaySkinMtl or the VrayFastSSS2 to the whole figure but no difference.
I found out, if I uncheck the "Prevent Subdivision Surfaces" checkbox on export, then I will get the already subdivided high detail mesh into 3ds max and VRay renders OK. But of course this blows up the whole viewport because of the high mesh details.

I've found this article http://docs.chaosgroup.com/display/V...lembic+Support saying, that "subdivision surfaces are not supported at present". So I was wondering, is there another workaround for this?

    I'm using VRay 3.20.03, 3ds Max 2016 64bit, Windows 10 64 Bit

Thank you very much for any help!!!

This setup works fine here according to our test with primitive objects:

What happens if alembic file is imported via V-Ray proxy instead 3DSmax Standard importer?
Is there a chance to send us that scene for investigation?
