  • 3dmax Substitute modifier = no Velocity channel/motion blur

This isn't a high priority since the work-around was easy and the case is very specific, but I did find an issue with the 3d max substitute modifier and vray velocity/motion blur.

I wanted the ability to quickly replace specific instances in-scene so I was using a box as a placeholder with a substitute modifier. The substitute modifier referenced a poly object in my scene that, in turn, was referencing a point cache .xml animation (I probably should have just used a vray proxy object, so really not a huge issue).

When I went to render it, vray did not recognize that the substitute modifier was referencing an animated mesh. While the animation from frame to frame rendered correctly, vray did not flag the objects as animated and so the velocity channel took no samples and rendered blank (all gray). Also, no matter what I tried, I could not get motion blur in camera to work. When I cut out the substitute modifier and instead had a staight-forward mesh with a point cache, the velocity channel rendered out correctly as desired.

Again, not a huge issue. Easily worked around, but thought you would like to know.

    Thanks for the pointer
If it was that easy, it would have already been done
