  • converting object and shaders to maya.

i've been testing the conversion of some assets to vrmesh in order to use them in maya.

the vrmesh export works great for the geo but i can't get it to retain the materials (multisub) as they all come out grey.
so i tried exporting a vrscene file and for some reason i cant load the mesh into maya but the shaders import fine and with the textures.
then i imported the vrmesh and since it had a shader created started replacing the different shaders linked to it with the ones from the vrscene file.
no matter which options i tried in the vrmesh the shader remained grey although the textures get loaded at render time.
so last i converted the vrmesh to a mesh and assigned the shader which showed up in the render.

i'm sure i'm doing it wrong but cant figure out where exactly. is it possible to load a vrscene file with materials and models in maya or get a usable material with
    the vray mesh export???

did you try going to create/vray/vray scene manager which is designed to handle the vrscene loading?

i looked everywhere but can't seem to find this option in maya...
I only have the option to create or import a proxy or create from vray plugin.

it sounds like you are working with older vray build Do you have access to nightlies? You should get latest vray and try that tool.

i don't have access to the newer version at work unfortunately and it might take ages before i can convince the IT guys to even think about upgrading haha.
guess i'll have to wait... thanks.

if there is any workaround i would love to hear it too.

.vrmesh file doesn't hold the material it self it just keeps the material position and name. Make sure to enable Create Multi/sub-object Mtl option in 3ds max when exporting the proxy. When you load the vrmesh in Maya you will get vraymeshmtl which will hold the names and the position of the original shaders. Then you need to Import V-Ray material form file and assign those materials in the according vraymeshmtl slots.

i tried doing as suggested a few times but no matter which shader i assigned in the vraymeshmtl slots the render remains a grey shader unless i merge the model in the scene as a mesh.

Could you send us an example scene with the 3ds max and Maya file as well as the vrmesh and vrscene to support@chaosgroup.com? Make sure to mention this thread and the V-Ray version.
