  • EXR Regions an VRay 3.3

We are getting renders in EXR format that do not save the region (data window) in the EXR. When saving out of the VFB (either manually, or using the save channels option) we DO get the region. However, the main beauty pass saved through Max does not have the region.

Anyone else seeing this? It could be a Max 2016 thing. I set the EXR saver to Save Region for both the main render and the VFB channels.

Using these regions greatly speed up Fusion.

    Thoughts?

Are you writing the EXR files using the "Common" tab of the render settings, or through the "raw image file" option of V-Ray?

    Best regards,
    Vlado

It is the common tab saver, or rather the command line option from 3dsmaxcmd.exe as called by or render controller.

Had no problems in 2014. Not sure if it is VRay 3.3 or 2016 that has the issue (or I missed some settings). Our 2014 is still in VRay 3.2.x.

Note that I get the region for the VFB channels which are saved with the save separate channels settings in the frame buffer rollout. Also, when I choose to save an EXR I see that the region is turned on and it is use ZIPS compression.

I did a quick test with 3DSMax 2016 and V-Ray 3.30.03 but and it seems to work fine here:

In order to find out whether it is V-Ray or 3DSmax related would you please run a few tests without V-Ray and see if it works as expected?

I am trying to store as scanlines rather than tiles (ideal for Fusion). Not sure what is going on, because it worked great in 2014. I need to do some further tests.

I was using store as scanlines, and ZIP per scanline band compression. Let me try ZIP per scanline compression.

And thanks for looking at this.

Seems to be my scene because a test scene is now working fine.

Will have to do some research.

It is still good idea to check if it works fine with other render engines.
Keep us posted if you find something.
