  • Vray Fur density problem with "uneven" meshes

Is vray fur only distributed by the density of the mesh? I mean, I have a model that is not evenly subdivided - some parts have less polygons and others have more. So when rendering, the fur is more concentrated in the parts that have more polygons which is undesirable. Can I make it more evenly distributed? I Tried a B&W texture in the density slot but that didn't help, it still puts more fur where there are more polygons. This is really limiting me in the usage of Vray Fur. Any tips to make this work or any workarounds?

    Thanks!

VRayFur will always generate at least one strand per triangle; for very dense meshes this may lead to more strands per area than is specified in the UI. It is on the "to do" list to fix it.

Thanks for the reply. So basically, there's no way at the moment to distribute the fur evenly on a mesh with varying polygon density? No tricks or workarounds? I know that Vray displacement subdivides the mesh at render time so that it looks even on meshes with few polygons or varying polygon density. It would be cool if Vray fur could do the same and add fur evenly on the model regardless of its density.

That's not what I said The fur will be distributed evenly if the specified density is sufficiently large. You can then use a density map (f.e. VRayColor) to reduce the resulting number of hairs. I can get you an example if you can't figure it out...

Oh, sorry. I had to read this twice, makes sense now. I will try this out and report back. thanks a lot for the tip!

I still can't figure out how to make VrayFur place hair evenly onto an object with varying mesh density. I tried adding a VrayColor in the Density slot but this only seems to control the number of hairs, not their distribution. Please check the attached image.

Here is a quick tutorial how to do it.
Let's say we have this Fur Distribution:

1.Increase Per Area parameter until you get an evenly distributed Fur like this:

2.Add V-Ray color to Density map and modify it's color to decrease the number of strands. Black means less strands white more:

Here is a sample scene where you can see the exact setup:
