  • Vray Reflections Flat

    Hi everyone!

I'm converting a scene I've previously rendered in Corona to Vray 3.3 so that I can use some of the exciting new features. As a long-time user of Vray I've started using Corona recently for quick jobs. Before I go any further, this isn't a Vray vs Corona battle - I'm well aware there are big differences between the two packages and the means in which they both render our images and I accept that there are pros and cons to using both.

On comparing two images the reflections in the floor are very different - personally I much prefer how Corona renders the reflections - I know it's subtle but I think it has much more depth. In comparison the Vray material looks very flat. The settings for both materials (as far as I can tell) are as close as they could be.

I've tried tweaking various parameters including ramping the IoR, adjusting glossiness etc but none of those seem to lift the reflections to anywhere near the level they're at with the Corona image.

More than just for this particular visual it would be good to know if I can achieve this effect in Vray at all. The new Vray update has a lot of new features I like and does help me get to the stage of a first render quicker than ever. With how well Vray is supported I'd love to switch back to it for even the quick jobs but if my renders continue to look flat I'll have to keep using Corona. Can anyone help me achieve a similar effect in Vray or do I just have to accept that this is how it will look?

Here are the renders straight out of max and the settings for the materials.

The reflection color is white on the corona render, and gray on the vray render?

Yes, the grey in the Vray material is 153,153,153 which equates to the 0.6 value in Corona. The white colour slot in Corona is just a multiplier of the reflection value.

But they aren't the same render engine, so why use the same settings?

Just adjust the Vray reflection until it looks like the corona one? Set the reflection colour to white, and the glossiness to .8 and see where that gets you.

I know, but as a comparison I thought that was a good place to start. I did mention that I tweaked various parameters including the reflection amount, glossiness and IoR but nothing seemed to get close.

I do think I've found a solution though. Whilst researching I noticed that Chaos introduced the Microfacet GTR shader in 3.0 which is the model Corona uses. I changed the material to that in the BRDF rollout, increased the IoR (significantly) and have a very acceptable result.

          Here's a quick progressive render:
