  • New adaptive sampling algorithm

after quite a bit of testing of the new SP3 update I found that the new adaptive sampling algorithm is problematic with some scenes, no matter how much I lower the noise threshold I still get a certain amount of undesired grain in my renders.

so far disabling the new adaptive sampling algorithm via maxscript has been the only solution.
    (renderers.current.twoLevel_adaptiveMethod=0)

My particular scene has a large amount of IES lights I've always had to use significantly more subdivs on those lights to get clean renders, I don't know if this contributes to the problem.

I'm using subpixel-mapping OFF and recommended setting per the "Cheatsheet: How to get a Cleaner image with SP3" thread.

If you can get me any scenes to vlado@chaosgroup.com it will be very helpful to see what's going on; it might not be an issue with the sampler itself, but with the IES lights, as you noted.

    Best regards,
    Vlado

      I sent you the scene.
The left side has the new adaptive sampling algorithm on and the right side is off. That's only difference in the renders.

        Hi Vlado,

I just wanted to check and see if you had a chance yet to check my scene.

        Thanks,

Do you have probablistic lights enabled?

              Nope. IES Lights hate probabilistic.

Just checking up...I wan to know if I'm doing something wrong I have this issues on several scenes. having to maxscript the new adaptive sampling algorithm off is a pain.

                  what is your clr threshold?
Looks to me like it needs to be reduced slightly.
