  • White outline in image when using V-Ray Sky

I want to know how to get rid of the white outlines left by Vray Sky when outputting an image. I've tried to defringe and remove white matte in Photoshop but the problem persists and what not but the problem is heavy when using forest pack trees and what not.

Isn't there some sort of premultiplication? Why wouldn't ChaosGroup offer a Straight Matte option?

Would you happen to be using PSD Manager?

Well ChaosGroup's options are perfect. If you want to cut out you should render against black background. PS doesn't handle alpha's correctly so you need to find hacks in your workflow to make it work. Outputting and comping to 32 bit helps.

Bobby recently found a setting in PSD manager that fixed the issue for him

How do I render against a black background and still utilize the lighting from the sky?

put the sky in the gi and reflection override slots in the environment tab in vray , and set the max environment to black.

Have you actually tried that? This did not work for me.

Yes, this definitely works. You don't even need to put it into the refract/reflect override in my experience is it's the same. Interiors require a bit more setup though depending on how you want you window glass to behave.

Again, this does not work for me. I only put it in the GI slot because I am using a dome light for reflections. I don't understand what the problem is if it works for you and not for me.

is your domelight set to invisible? otherwise it will show up in the background. that workflow definitely works, its *the* standard way to comp a render out of vray.

O.k. So I'm used to Maya a little where everything is a node, including sun and sky with mental ray. I couldn't find a sun node to drag and drop into the panel. I didn't realize in order to specify a sun node, I just had to select it in the viewport. Max is very weird about the Material editor and how it interacts with the 3D windows.

Before I was told by a coworker to turn on the "specify sun" but not do anything with it. This resulted in the white outline still. Once I picked the sun, it worked again. It doesn't help things when everyone is so used to doing things a certain way. Everyone here just uses HDRI environments which I find to be completely picky and not worth the time for exterior renders. All is working again.
