Material override is still grainy. I dropped the color thresh down to try and counter the noise. Here is the file, which might take a little to synchronize.

Yes, it has synchronized. About 30 min. in Progressive mode is already returning better results.

Ill throw it on my RT box tonight to see how it goes, I have two 780 TI's on that one that seems to be pretty fast.

Cant use my office farm tonight as we are moving buildings so that one is down till no later than Monday hopefully.
          Cheers,

              Hey Bobby,

Just opened the file. I'm trying it out, but your file was set up on RT for CPU. Just make sure it is set up for CUDA. I have also 970 and it works great. But set it up as Production Render the RT, not as an Active Shade, if you know what I mean. I'll let you know anything else that I see.

I get some memory error on Cuda, but I do have it on active shade. I'll try on production.

I've dropped the res and changed a few things in the scene - you'll have to rebalance the light and make some compromises too, back to you in about 20 minutes.

This is still running the modified renderer so I'll pop some notes first:

First of all the ambient light is set to white which I'd imagine is a mistake, that'll fuck your lighting.
Second is that the levels of all your lights are miniscule - the under counter lights are 0.25 in multiplier which is seriously low - they'll be outputting tiny amounts and you're into light cutoff territory.
Third is that you've a hellish situation to get your very wide ranging hdri in through the small size of the windows with a lot of the other ambient light having to bounce from other rooms off camera, through some corridors and into the kitchen.

The scene as it was was using a very wide aperture and slow camera shutter speed to try and let as much of the little light flood in to get an exposure.

                    It's a bit of a rough one!

So I did a few things. First I put ambient light back to black. Second I brought up the light multipliers quite a bit. I've got the under counter lights at 10 right now - this is probably too strong but with the previous render they didn't show up much at all. I put in some vray lights at the windows - originally in skylight portal mode but again with the windows letting light in off camera, it was just horrendously dirty in terms of noise. I said sod it and changed to a flat colour - not as nice as the hdri at all, but very clean by comparison - what could be done as a compromise would be to add in a directional sunlight outside too which should add more dimension and brighten things a lot. Its the same situation with your hdri as a reflection environment - to get enough rays for the materials it's either the dome light shining in getting lots of subdivs or shade rate, or tonnes of shade rate for the materials - either way it's tough.

I didn't get a chance to try all of the various speed ups like putting max ray intensity back on, that could have been a life saver as there's values up to 240 in the hdri.

The crux of it is you've got a really detailed hdri with massive variance in range, you've got tiny windows for the light rays to try and get through and the values you were using made the scene quite dark. Render and tweaked scene to come soon, again it's not as nice as the setup you had as it's gone to simpler exterior lighting and no nice hdri for it to reflect either.

That's good to know. I was checking the scene and I figured it had something to do with the HDRI, as all lights off and HDRI on was still producing noisy results. Then I also thought it may have something to do with the camera, so it seems like what you are getting from Joconnell is right on. If you want it to take longer and look better, like he says, use your original settings, but I only rendered 4 buckets in 20 minutes at 800 resolution, so not sure that you want to go with your original settings.

On the HDRI, I actually made it smaller and blurred it a bit in PS, that may also help.

                      Alex

I started with a V-Ray Sun/Sky, but it really was the same issue, for the ambient, I don't think I have ever touched that, so good to know. I usually set the camera to real world and set lights accordingly. Thanks for looking into another one of my crazy scenes.

Right so, here's my beauty and sample rate. It was about an hour on a dual xeon at 1 / 16, colour thresh 0.005 and msr at 48. I'd be inclined to think the reflections and lighting is still dirty, it's an enclosed environment where everything is glossy and there's very little in terms of smaller than a pixel geometric detail or really crisp, contrast in the textures - all of your weight is in the lighting and shading and not the aa. I'd be inclined to go even higher than the 48 shade rate, you don't really need more AA.

All good - the more problems I look at just adds to the list of solutions I've got at hand for another scene in the future. Whatever you're doing it's generally working, a lot of your renders are far classier than mine at this point.
