  • max's "shellac" material...compatible?

Quick question; I notice Evermotion use this material on some of their HD cars collection; wondering if it is likely to slow down renders, and if so, what a preferable V-ray native method would be of recreating something similar?
They use it to give the look of clear-coat

Yes, it is likely to slow down your renders. The better approach is to use a VRayBlendMtl material (maybe in "Additive" mode, although I don't recommend that one either).

    Best regards,

      thanks
Bad form that they're using it in their products, I'd have thought they'd know better!

Agreed. It really bugs me that people still use incompatible maps and sell their products as "Vray Ready".

there is also much of "normal bump" used...donĀ“t know exactly evermotion or itrees....but there were much of default 3dsmaxmaterials used in the past, that , as i know, were not definitely defined as "NOT" vray compatible... also for ex. maxblend

while we're on this topic; VizPeople plants often don't have 'none' on the filtering of their opacity maps. Is that still a problem like it used to be?

              It's fine, it's not a problem.
