  • Vray 3.30.05 stops working midway (3DS Max 2014)

My machine has recently had all it's software and OS reinstalled, so a very clean machine. Currently working on a project since then and I'm experiencing intermittent connection with V-Ray.

I'm not too up on the Services and Processes side of things, and not a big fan of Dongled software either (all stuff I don't know too much about) - but as far as I can tell, the VRLService is running, during the failure VRay (what happens is, is that I'll be working fine in 3DS Max, using VRay fine, then after about 20mins or so, VRay will no longer be working and I'll shut down and restart 3DS Max, whereby I'm told by VRay that "Could not obtain a Licence (-197)".

If I restart the computer, I can go into 3DS Max and start working again (for around 20-30mins).

I looked at Control Panel "WiBuKey" and it struggled to find anything and reported "wibuke64: fatal error wk1204 - wibubox with bad version".

I've looked at WiBuKey drivers and note that the last one on their site is July 2015, so I've downloaded that and will update ?

Could my Dongle have developed a fault ?

(my dongle is physically inside my PC case, so it doesn't get touched / disturbed in any way).

Any ideas please ? (I did submit a ticket but this is happening too often now and constantly restarting my computer each time is wasting me time).

    Many thanks.
    Jez

I have a similar problem with my dongle (at least I suppose it's a dongle fault, since it's a really old one). What I do is, when V-Ray stops working, I simply remove it for 3 seconds and plug it again. No need to restart Max nor anything, just make sure the Render Setup window is closed.

          Thanks everybody.

If you asked me to guess, right now, I'm more inclined to believe it is a BIOS setting first, followed by a USB/mobo issue (really hope it's not that!), followed by perhaps a dodgy dongle.

I'll check my bios settings, and see if that fixes things.

for now we can wish in the future that the dongle system will change, a friend of mine lost his last year and because he didn't use it much he didn't even bother to replace it, so tiny

This looks like a WiBu-Key drivers issue, please follow the WibuKey troubleshooting guide bellow to re-install the drivers:
                http://docs.chaosgroup.com/display/V...YDriversIssues

Make sure also that you are using the latest version of V-Ray License server:

                  Thanks everyone for their input.

                  The issues were several fold;

                  1) I had old Wibukey drivers (why I don't know because this is a fresh machine with newly installed software, including v-ray 3.30.05 which I'd have thought would have the latest wibu drivers).

                  2) Ditto above re. Licence Server

                  3) There was a Windows Hotfix which was causing an issue as well (with uninstalling wibu and possibly was conflicting with wibukey as well).

Like Tomek, I think I might have an issue with USB on my mobo - it's just a hunch but for example I have found that my preferred mouse (a Sharkoon Fireglider) does not like being used in a particular USB port and does occasionally cause my machine to freeze on Windows startup......(when I use my very basic, but very trusty Microsoft mouse I have no such issues whatsoever).

Anyways, thanks to the fantastic support at Chaosgroup for sorting me out
