  • Cube 6x1 camera type is mirrored

Not sure how long this has been broken, but the "Cube 6x1" camera type is mirrored when rendered. I can't imagine this is intentional behavior and seems like a bug to me.

Very easy to replicate - Create a scene with some objects, create a camera, set the render output size to a 6:1 aspect ratio, set the camera type to Cube 6x1

Each camera view renders as a mirrored image from what it should be.

    Max 2015 Design
    Tested with
    VRay 3.30.05 and 3.40.01

We just found the 3.2 demo video, there is a 6x1 render example at the end and you can see that in the demo the rendering is a left-right mirror image of the viewport.

I think that's the intended behavior - we checked several times times that this is the result expected by VR viewers.

    Best regards,

Ok Vlado, We are flipping the image in post to get the correct view of our scene. Maybe the documentation can be updated to include a warning note that this camera mode produces mirrored output so users are not left wondering what is broken? Also, a check box to toggle that behavior on/off would be nice so that there is something in the VRay interface that clues people into the issue and provides a choice.

      my 2 cents

      Thanks Vlado!

When you are flipping it to get the correct view for your scene, what exactly are you viewing it in? Because if you load that now-flipped image into anything that is expecting a 6x1 camera style image (vitrual desktop, orbx, oculus, any number of other vr apps) then the result in VR will be wrong.

We are using the 6x1 as the most efficient way to render the 6 box views of an animated camera, and then chopping it up and feeding it into SkyBox Studio (plugin, AE) to generate an equirectangular (spherical) video that we then upload to YouTube, etc. We found that rendering the spherical frames in Vray was a big waste of time because so many pixels are clumped around the poles (straight up and straight down).

I've experienced the same . When using this output chopped up for KrPano for instance you have to mirror it in photoshop first.

Are you doing stereoscopic with KRpano?

I've only tried stereoscopic with a spherical camera together with KRPano, but Stanley (SBrusse on the forum) told me to use cubemap because they are basically better (quality) for VR.

I do, and very soon I'll make a tool available that lets you upload your VrayCubemap and press one button to create a complete mono or stereo panorama tour

                      Hi Stan
                      Hows this coming along?

                        Actually pretty well.
Have done the major part already and send it to Christopher Nichols for review, he gave me a few tips to improve that are quite a bit of work so it should be all done in a couple of weeks if everything goes well

Thank you for the VRtome update, the site works really well. I am also experiencing what the original poster mentioned about getting a mirrored version of what you expect. I also noticed that my Floor was where my ceiling should be and my ceiling where my floor should be. Is there an official tutorial somewhere for running a 360 Pano rendering? All I did was change my scene camera in the environment variables to a "Cubemap - 6x1 ratio" and up my resolution a bit. Thanks for your time!

There is definitely something wrong, you should not have everything flipped if you uploaded your Vray Cubemap render straight to vrto.me

Could you make sure you don't have any scale applied to your cam?

CG has done a tutorial to render to cubemap :
                              https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B8IsX0vS1Uk

If you still experience some issues, I can have a look at your scene if you'd like. Don't hesitate to strip down the scene of any assets if it makes it easier and send it through by PM
