  • Irradiance map and displacement

I've noticed that a finely detailed displacement can take 50 times longer to render if you use irradiance map.

I've had it come up on two scenes now, one a mini orb corrugated fence and the other a rammed earth wall with a 3000x8000 pixel displacement. (both 2d displacement.)

Both scenes were going to take over 60 hours to render with 6 machines and were getting stuck on these areas of the render on the final pass.

I eventually ended up figuring out what it was, and unchecking 'use irradiance' on their respective textures and now the scenes render in 2 hrs total and look a little better.

So now i just have to remember for the next job that if i have anything with fine detail and displacement to NOT use IR.

But, I thought you might like to know about the issue in case it is a bug.

IRR, it seems so yesterday . I have been using BF+BF with all defaults. I noticed with the denoiser, I can drop my max subdivision from the default 24 to 8.

The 'static geometry' option in the VrayDisplacementMod might help here. It'll calculate the displacement before rendering.

We have too much work and not enough render power for BF + BF... the boss has no clue that paying people to surf the web while waiting for test images is a false economy... geezus, I can appreciate BF + LC but BF BF, madness! :P

I'll give the static geometry a try rens and post back in 15.

I have gotten spoiled with my new machine. It is awesome to render 4K-6K images, with all the bells and whistles, in around 35-40 minutes. The investment has already paid off. Pre new computer a 4K would have taken 3-4 hours and 6K was out of the question. But hey, if you get paid to surf the web, more power to you

This option does not exist for 2d mode.
