I thought this might have been the result of having some non-v-ray material in the scene, so I ran "V-Ray Scene Converter" from the menu, but I'm still getting this issue. It doesn't matter if it's Progressive or Bucket. I've also tried a different material on the affected parts. Still nothing. I do NOT see it when I'm using active shade, but perhaps its because the resolution isn't as good. Is this a non-vray materials issue?

Is there an easy way to find (and remove) non-v-ray materials?

The easiest way would be vray scene converter. (Right click - vray scene converter)
Your existing vray materials wont be effected

Thanks, but I had tried that already. Turns out that V-ray scene converter DOES NOT convert "Autodesk Generic" materials. I always thought it converted everything. Oh well. Good to know!

sometimes a wrong normal map (wrong gamma on import) can create such effect.
Did you tested your scene with a Material Overide? or another Clamp Output Value?

In most of the times such issues are caused by Autodesk Generic material, so it is best to first remove them from the scene.

I tested with Material Override and it was fine, so suspicians confirmed with Generic material. So for this scene, I selected all of the v-ray materials that are visible to the camera and then hid them. I selected everything else and applied a v-ray black matte to kill any generic materials. Unhide everything and that fixed it. Seems like there ought to be a v-ray material converter that works with Generic materials... I haven't poked around on Script Spot yet, so perhaps there is.

Not exactly what you asked but this script selects all geo with no vray-materials applied.
