  • Wired and wireless on Windows 7

    Hi all - This is more of a network issue but it relates directly to my use of VRay. Apologies if it's a little off point for this forum, though.

    Basically I have a wireless card in my desktop that communicates with the internet modem in another part of my office. I also have a LAN connection in the same computer that communicates with my render farm nodes. I have yet to figure out how to get them to play nice while both connections are enabled. I've tried tweaking the adapter 'Metric' to give one priority over another, but that didn't work. Usually what happens is my internet works but I can't ping\connect\send jobs to my nodes.

    Any advice? I've scoured the internet and people either say vague things about you can't have dual gateways (?), subnet masks (?) or say it just can't be done. This has been an ongoing problem for me for a while, I'd be so stoked if it were solved.

    Thanks!

    Daniel

    If you want use 2 different networks, you need to create bridge.
    I don't recommend that software bridge it can cause a lot of issues.

    Best is to use little switch-WiFi / access point.(example, Netgear EX7000)
    You can plug your computer + nod with RJ45, both communicate directly with RJ45 and you keep your network installation wireless for the Internet with the Wi-Fi.

      Hi Raph4 - Thanks for the input. I used to have a setup similar to that (except everything was wired) and it did work quite well. I will give it a shot with my spare Asus AC68U I have lying around. It's the one you get free from TMobile and is pretty beefy, we'll see if I can turn it into a wireless bridge. I just thought there might be a magic bullet to solve 2 active connections at once on Windows 7.

      Thanks again,
      Daniel

        You can still try create network bridge

          Got it working. Put my Asus router in 'Media Bridge' mode to connect to the modem and ran Cat5's from the farm and desktop into the Asus. The only weird thing is I can't send jobs to my nodes using their computer name anymore, I have to use their IP addresses. They're all listed as having the same IP if I ping them. So I guess that's something with the DNS setup...? Not a deal breaker though.

            If I understand :
            When you ping different computer name you obtain same IP for all ?? It's curious.
            If need, you can still clear Windows DNS : ipconfig /flushdns

            How is setting-up your network ?
            [Internet] -- modem --- rj45 ? ---> Asus ac68u ---> rj45 for render farm & Wi-Fi for desktop, or rj45 for desktop too ?

            best, I think :
            [Internet] -- modem --- rj45 --> Asus ac68u --- Wi-Fi --> Wi-Fi Repeater/access point with 4xRJ45 --- rj45 --> render farm & desktop
            With this setting, your desktop & render farm use same network range and communicate with RJ45.
            And you keep your Internet connection at the same time.

              Hi, yes if I'm on my desktop and I ping 'Node1-PC' I get a different IP than is actually there. Also if under the VRay DR settings I list 'Node1-PC' it doesn't work. If I use the manually assigned IP address I gave the node VRay DR works fine.

              My setup is:
              [Internet] --- integrated modem\router --- wifi --- AC68U --- rj45 connections to Farm and Desktop.

              Cheers,

              Daniel

                OK, finally it's basic network setting.
                Try clean Windows DNS cache and restart your desktop can fix the issue.

                If you still have network issues, you can force Windows to translate node computer name to its real IP by editing hosts file on your desktop computer.

                how to edit host file
                http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials...s-7-vista.html

                example if "Node1-PC" IP is 192.168.1.20

                edit hosts file and add this line :
                Code:
                192.168.1.20       Node1-PC
                save and restart your computer.
