So I was just hacking through this issue. Read through the forum and found a number of other people experiencing something similar. I thought I tried everything to fix this with no solution, but think I may have just come up with something. Thought it was worth sharing.
I only had Vray Denoiser in my Render Elements. I deleted the element. Then added it back in. I noticed it filled in the file name and path in the Selected Element and Parameters output field. It apparently snagged this info from the standard 3dsMax render output (save as...) field. I cleared this by closing the Render Dialog and then typing rendoutputfilename = "" into the listener. I again deleted my render element and then added it back in. This time the output field in the Selected Element and Parameters area was blank. After that, no more error!! The files saved out as expected.
Hope this helps someone!!
