  • alpha map edges causing image alpha override

That title was hard to write. Not sure how to quickly describe this.

I have a logo I needed added to a product, but on top of a clear glass. It's not unwrapped, so applying the image quickly would cause the image to project onto both surfaces. In my haste I just cut out a section of what I needed, and offset it a hair from the clear surface. That will sort of give the illusion of ink thickness anyway.

Ok, so I don't want extra shadows or anything. So I just made a map for color for the diffuse, and I created that with full bleed around everything to avoid alpha problems (I thought).
Then I create a greyscale map for the object alpha. The render looks correct. The alpha does not.

There are several objects behind the object, but the edges of the map are using the antialiased bits of the mask to override the entire rendered image alpha to less than 1.0, even though there are objects behind it.
I tried a few different options, and some made it better than others, but I can't fix it.

I am using progressive render mode. I wonder if that could have something to do with it.
For now, I'll just duplicate my render, with a copy that ignores alpha, then animate a manually masked copy of the object behind the other render. Otherwise I get a funny looking transparent line around my logo.

Anyone know why this is happening? And how to fix it?
It's nice to have the option of forcing the front object's transparency to override the background, but I don't want that to happen in this case. If there are objects behind this, then the alpha should be a total contribution of the transparent values. Since the objects behind this are completely opaque, the value should be 1.

It will be better if you could provide some images and scenes which will help us to understand the setup and the issue better.
Without a clear understanding of the issue or the effect you are after it is difficult to propose any advice.
