  • 3.5 ShadowCatcher/Matte still does not work with Dome out of the box

    Hi,

just letting you know that the bug with matte geometry + dome light doesn't appear to be fixed or that anything changed at all. Bounced rays that hit parts of matte geometry which are out of camera frustum will correctly pass through matte geometry, but will end up hitting screen-space mapped environment instead of dome light. As a result, screen mapped background ends up ghosting through scene objects. This applies to both diffuse GI rays as well as specular reflection rays.

Awesome. That's exactly how it should look!

After this change, setup will be super simple. Just throw backplate into environment slot, HDRI into dome light, uncheck "visible" property of dome, and enable matte for ground plane (which will be available as single-click in toolbar)

Mine doesn't do anything... I press shadow catcher... nothing happens (apart from saying to switch to vray renderer) I do that, it does nothing.

The button is supposed to adjust the V-Ray Object Properties for the selected object(s). Does it do that for you?

I didn't notice that.... I thought the idea was to make a matte shadow material and apply it to the object.

Maybe change the tooltip to "convert object to shadow catcher"?

                  Can't check now...

Yes, we might need to clarify it.

                          OK...getting bleary-eyed here...

Is it just me, or is the Matte Object not working unless there is something in the Environment slot?

                          Maybe I'm fat-fingering something...

If your environment slot is black, the matte result will only be visible in the alpha channel.
