  • 3.5 Beta 2: Bug in Domelight with Ground Projection?

    Hey,
I don't know if it is a bug or if I am doing something wrong here. When I am using an HDRI inside a Domelight with ground projection, I get a strange kind of cut off in my reflections. The teapot is sitting on a VrayPlane with the shadow catcher option. The HDRI is instanced to the environment slot. Values for the ground projection are default. Is this the intended behaviour? Scene can be sent if necessary.

    Regards

    Oliver

That looks right to me. Ground plane is now correctly cuting off exactly where camera's field of view ends.

However, this should happen mainly with a backplate, because it's camera projected, so there is no backplate information outside of the camera view.

I tested it in Corona to make sure I am not talking nonsense. Corona does the same thing with clipping the projection outside of the camera frustum, but it does work fine with dome (hemisphere) HDRI projection:

Just to make sure: I am not using any backplate in the example above. Only the spherical HDRI. I didn't test in any other software, but I have to say that the output from that other renderer there looks what I would expect.

To the devs: Is there anything that can be done about this? It would be nice because I would not be able to see any transition when using the ground projection without a backplate. Often we get spherical HDRIs that are taken at a totally different location to the backplate, so mostly I don't need to project the backplate, but the spherical image itself. That harsh cut off line messes things up, though.

Edit: The behaviour is the same in 3.4, just tested it.

Edit2: The provider of the free HDRI I am using for this test has an image of a chrome ball on the site for demonstration, without the distracting line. These are rendered with V-Ray, but for Maya. I didn't test if it is working there, but it may be a clue: https://hdr-sets.com/01_COMPANY/Prod...F_CHROME_P.jpg

I am sure it was too late for the current release, but I assume that this issue is still being looked at?

Yes, I have a fix actually, there just wasn't time to include it in the official release.

              Best regards,
              Vlado
