  • vrmesh normals issue

Converting .obj files to vrmesh using ply2vrmesh - the vertex normals are different (worse) compared to the obj imported directly into Max.

I've attached a jpeg to show what I mean.

    Vray 3.40.03
    3dsmax 2014 SP1
    Windows 7 Professional SP1

Is there anything I can do here? I've tried different -smoothangle settings but there seems to be no effect.

I would be extremely grateful for any tips!

Does it work better if you import the .obj in 3ds Max and create the proxy from there?

Yes, it works as expected if I import the .obj into Max first.

I have however 14000 files to convert so doing them manually through Max isn't really feasible.

Any idea as to why different -smoothAngle values seem to make no difference to the result?

Admittedly the source model is very poor but it is all that is available unfortunately.

There are a few things that might be wrong, but I will need some way to verify a potential fix. Do you think you can get us some part of that .obj file to experiment with?

        Best regards,
        Vlado

            Hi Vlado,

how can I send you the file? Is E-Mail ok or is a different method better?

Email to vlado@chaosgroup.com is fine. Thanks! I have some ideas on what to change, but I need to verify with the actual geometry.

              Best regards,
              Vlado
