  • So how do you actually resume a render then?

    https://labs.chaosgroup.com/index.ph...ble-rendering/

this page shows us how to resume a render - and I rendered part of a scene, resumable renderign was available... and then I stopped.

Started again and it started from the beginning.

Presumably the light map and irradiance maps aren't saved then?

What steps do we have to take or be aware of when we actually want to resume rendering?

And can you update your documentation so we don't need to ask again, please?

    1. The light cache is saved, but the irradiance map is not and it needs to be recalculated when resuming. It should still continue from where it was stopped after the irradiance map is recalculated.

    2. The option in the render setup should be enabled before starting a new render, not only when resuming. The scene should not be changed between stopping and resuming, except for the progressive sampling options (min/max subdivs, render time, noise threshold), they can be changed. There are two output modes that are not currently supported for the bucket sampler - deep output, and tiled EXR output (without a memory frame buffer).

    3. Yes, we should mention these things in the documentation for the official release.

You still haven't actually told me what I have to do though?

If the "resume render" option is selected, I just hit render and it will continue to render? is that it?

Or do I ave to do anything else?

I was rendering to a PNG - but I think the 'resume render' saved a VRIMG as well, is this secondary file the one that will pick up and render anyway?

You know what would be a good idea - a step by step instruction.

      thanks for your reply

Yes, just start the render and it will continue.

Yes, it works with additional .vrimg files for the bucket sampler, and with .vrprog files for the progressive sampler.

Right, how do we start a new render with resumable rendering, if we have an old file but want to start again?

Like, there is a file now - I have edited the scene, I want to re-render from the start, but I also want to be able to save the file if I have to stop.

We need an X to "start from scratch" or "delete existing resumable files"

Maybe even a thing that says "resumable render available" - and could this option know whether the scene has been edited in such a way that it can't be resumed properly?

For the moment you have to delete the resumable file to start a new render. We have actually discussed adding an option to start a new render, but most likely it won't happen for 3.50.
Checking the scene for changes automatically would be nice indeed, but I'm not really sure if it's technically feasible.
            Thanks for the suggestions!

Come on guys, don't ship it without a 'delete' button - dot your i's and cross your t's.

I mean, you already read in whether the file is resumable or not, so you know, surely it's a tiny piece of code - these things matter to your public!
