  • no photometric light?

    ok, feeling stupid here. I'm sure it's some button that needs to be checked.

    I just updated vray from 3.4 to 3.50.04.
    vray is authorized.

    I made a box, I added one free light photometric light. I hit render. It's black.
    Alpha shows correctly.

    I was thinking, maybe I need a camera? So Ctrl+C, instant physical camera. Still black.

    I started posting because I thought I just had a setting wrong. I added a vray light and behold, there was light.

    What's the deal with photometric lights? I thought those worked? Is there just a setting within them that allows it?
    Playing with it just for a second, the default is RayTraced shadows. Switching to....pretty much Anything else gives me a render.

    Isn't there a window showing me warnings? I haven't used vray for much of anything in a while and things seem to have changed quite a bit.

    Photometric lights are supported, but in most situations the standard Ray traced shadows will not work properly with V-Ray.
    It's best to switch to VRayShadows to avoid any issues.

      perfect. Will definitely do that.
      I would have expected a non-supported shadow to give an error. Also, I wouldn't expect everything to be black. I just assumed it would be shadow-less. Then I might have guess the issue was shadows sooner.

      Now if I could just figure out why the viewport lighting is so much brighter than the render in vray. I have to turn the viewport lights to default otherwise everything is just near-white.

        We have not been able to figure out the viewport lighting exactly. Autodesk will need to improve their viewport API in this regard.

          Awe man, not what I was hoping to hear. That's not ever likely to happen in my lifetime.

          Well, then. I wonder if it's a ton of work to set a global scale for all lights in vray. That way I could model light my scene with something like a multiplier of .12 for the viewport. But when I go to render, it's back at 1?
          Just an idea. I guess the math there is backward, but you get the idea. I need to set up lights that are really dim, then have them render Not dim.

            I'm not sure what would be the best thing to do, to be honest. If you just need to see something, then enabling the default viewport lighting or using the hidden faces shading mode could work.
