Issue with Matte Shadow Render Element.

I'm consistently getting some weird and random(?) squares/shading issues with my matte shadow pass..? I've attached a recent one for reference.
the scene is quite basic and is lit by a vray sun and sky, but the issue happens with HDRi too...

any thoughts?
