  • License Server Issues

Once or twice a day, sometimes more than that, I get an error when I try to start a render on my local machine. Usually it's V-ray failed to obtain a license [-98]. I have one remote renderboxx that I send jobs to through backburner, and I also always have the spawner running on the remote machine to speed up local bucket rendering. I have to stop the license server and restart it and then it will work fine again. When it fails to obtain a license and I pull up the license server it shows the license as available. My licenses come from a local dongle. Since it's a simple matter to stop and restart the license server this isn't really a big deal, but it's annoying nonetheless.

The error message -98 means that the there isn't a V-Ray license available. The first thing we need to check is what is your dongle SN(how many Render Node license do you have), and how many machines exactly are you using?
So please open your web browser and type "localhost:30304" on the machine where dongle resides, and check if your V-Ray license is all engaged ? Please make a screenshot and send it back to us.

I have one workstation license and two render nodes. As I mentioned previously I usually have a render going through backburner on a separate render box. That uses up one render node. Then I am working locally in Max and rendering test images with distributed rendering enabled. That uses up the workstation license and the other free render node. That's it. We have one other artist with exactly the same setup - a dongle on that machine with 1 workstation license and 2 render nodes and a dedicated render box. All machines are on the same network but each workstation/render box pair is pointed to its own license server. It's not a matter of there not being sufficient licenses to cover what we're doing. Something else is going on.

It is very important to check when this error message appears if the machine where it appears, what exactly is the error message and do you have enough license to render, because as i can see, you have two dongles, first one is 1 x GUI + 2 x Render 3.0 license and the second dongle has only 1 x GUI and 1 x Render 3.0 node license. So if all the 4 machines is used for rendering at the same time and they are all set to point to both dongles, one of the machines will not be able to render, because you have a total of 3 x Render Node 3.0 licenses. Please confirm if the above assumption is correct, you can test it when you render with all of the 4 machines at the same time?

We're continuing to have issues with the new license server. Even when it's clear that not all licenses are in use we get "can't obtain a license (-9" errors intermittently.. Right now I can't even render within Max using my workstation license without getting that error. If I check the server status it shows the workstation license is engaged by 127.0.0.7. If I close max the workstation license shows as no longer engaged, so it's clearly not being taken by another machine on the network, but upon restarting max I have the same problem. Is there a way to revert to the old license server with 3.5? Our licenses are dongled so the online license server doesn't do anything for us anyway. This is becoming very disruptive.

We are sorry for the inconvenience made.
Yes, it is possible to uninstall the new License server and install the older one, when you download it from our web site.
But this issue probably won't be resolved by doing this action.
In order to help you further, we could arrange a Team Viewer session and help you.
