  • Render Mask not working ?

Using the Advanced Renderer, I've used Render Masks many times before, tried it today - didn't work.....

Is there a bug since I last used it ?

Normal Bucket rendering on my single workstation.

That's a bit unusual. Did you try merging the problematic objects in a new scene, resetting Vray's render settings and trying again? You can also try to create a box and attach these objects to it.

To be honest Alex, I'm finding VRay to be a bit flaky. I don't know what it is, and it's only seemed to be happening since I bought two new 1080 ti's a month back - using 37x drivers etc. Before I had Quadro cards and none of this was ever a problem (though I was on 2014 and have also made the jump to 2017 in that same time).

I know Render Masks doesn't have much to do with graphics drivers, but I've done so much testing of VRay recently (with my new toys) and finding so many bits here and there, mainly with reliability - I'm trying hard not to get too bogged down in becoming a f/t tester of software and just getting by.

2017, for me, has been very stable.

Well, if you're using Adv then GPUs don't have a role in rendering (except for lens FX and denoising). Did any of my suggestions work? I found 2017 to be very buggy for me so I'm still on 2016. It might be the source of your issues. Also, you're using the latest official release as your signature says (3.50.04), not a nightly, right? If not, try with the official release. I had some errors with the nightly on just one particular scene where at random times the rendering just crashed without any reason and switching back to 3.50.04 fixed it.

I'm finding my experience with VRay to be inconsistent - I'm having various issues, and I have reported them to support, but it's not always possible to send in a scene file for them to test. My signature is correct. I know GPUs don't have a role in this instance but I'm saying it's all a bit too much of a coincidence (as it seems I'm 'putting VRay to the test these days - as far as I am concerned).

If I listed all the issues I'm having with VRay, I'd say it's be around 10 in total.

It would be helpful for us to know what they are.

            Best regards,

              Hi Vlado,

Okay, here is one I sent to support a while ago - I was asked to send the scene file and I was mid project and didn't have time (plus it is very large, plus there is client confidentiality etc).

The background - I create spherical camera views of this same interior often (it's a repeat project) and regardless of which camera view I am rendering (there are 3 spherical cameras in the scene), the VRayReflection Render Element is incorrect - see the ceiling area (I have marked in red) it hows black in the same area of that render, regardless of the camera view ! Just a guess but the cutoff of the material (in the Options rollout) might be high. Try setting it to 0.001 or 0.0 and see if this fixes it.

Big thanks Alex, that was it - I set the cutoff to 0 and that fixed it (0.001 wasn't low enough )
