  • Vray doesn't like vector maps?

Last night I was rendering on my farm and certain frames were just freezing... with stuck buckets that never finished. The culprit seemed to be an AI vector file used as a diffuse texture and a vray blend coat mask. Once i converted it to a png file the problem went away. The problem seemed to be worse when the vector texture was covering a large portion of the frame.

Is this a known issue? I can try to simplify the scene and reproduce it if it's been unknown up to this point .

    Hello,

I remember examining a crash with the vector map a few years ago and it turned out to be a Max problem (happened in MR the same).
If it is not a problem - it would be helpful to send us a simplified scene to check if it is the same problem.

    Best regards,
    Yavor

Thanks for the scene. Unfortunately some code inside the vector map calculations goes into an infinite loop. Not sure there is anything we can do about it.

Thanks for investigating Yavor. Do you think the problem is the way that Vray deals with Vector maps coming from 3ds max's handler? Or is the max handler actually flawed and this is entirely on Autodesk's side?

I wonder if the problem would be replicated in MR or Arnold or Scanline?

V-Ray doesn't do anything specific about the vector maps - for us it is just a map and we ask for color from it. So my guess is that the problem is somewhere inside the vector map.
As far as I saw in the scene there are multiple vector maps - have you found out which of them causes the issue ?

I don't see a defect logged for this. Please email a simple sample scene to alfred.deflaminis@autodesk.com and I will log this.

can i send it to you with Vray as the render engine and with a vray material?

@Yavor -- there maybe be multiple problems but the one that caused issues most obviously was on the side of the bus -- a large one covering it. as the camera gets close to the bus, it becomes very large in the scene and i get stuck buckets. in one instance, while further away, the sticking bucket was on the ground -- but i think it was because it reflecting the vector map on the bus.

Thank you Davision, I am looking at it now and logging as needed. Vray materials and scenes are always welcome.

@Yavor, i tried to make a crude version of this scene with a Blend Raytrace material. It does not hang up when rendered in scanline or mentral ray. I sent the sample scene to Support email.

Are you sure the problem is Max's own handling of vectors and not related to how Vray works with them?

I still think yes - but I'll do some more tests. What is your OS by the way ?

Hm after a lot of poking I managed to reproduce the hang with Scanline, two Physical material inside a blend material. If you don't mind I'll send the scene to Deflaminis so that he can log it ?

Yes, thank you very much, Yavor. Please do. Also someone from Chaos asked in a support email for my OS: workstation is Win 10 -- but I have a render server with Win 7 where it also froze.

I am having this same issue. I looked at the time this one was logged and figured I'd check in to see if any resolution or work around has been arrived at. Using Vector Map, (AI file in RGB mode) and Vray 2.1.
