ONLINE LICENSING Connection to Online Licensing unavailable.

Hi there,

I would like to get this feature working. Here is my setup:

Ubuntu Server 16.04.2 LTE with all updates installed.
Installed LICENSE SERVER | 4.3.1
Dongle pluged in and recognized. Works for renderfarm and Workstations.

When i try to hit enable Online Licensing i get this message:

I am able to ping from my server to ols.chaosgroup.com

Any idea besides installing lic server 4.4.1?

If you are running off of an older dongle then the license is on the dongle and you wont be able to obtain an online license.

Well how do i know if I have an old dongle, which I assume I have. I thought that was the idea of having an online licence? My lic server is online 24/7.

Well localhost doesnt do it for me replaced it with ip instead

Online activation can only be done from the machine on which the license server is running.

From my understanding any dongles bought before Chaos released the online licensing option are not eligible to use the online licensing but I think Chaos is working on a way to change that. For me personally I prefer the dongle as I can work anywhere I want with it and dont need an internet connection and for places like my current office that wouldnt allow the use of that service as they see it as a security risk, hell I cant even run adobe creative cloud so Im stuck here with CS5 which is annoying to say the least. Ok sorry to run a bit OT.

Well how do you active it when it is installed on server distribution, with no gui. Is there a file where i can add usernames and passwords?

My dongel came with vray 1.5 i think

The dongle i cool, i know, but running it back and forth from office to office is a greater security risk How many usb sticks have you lost in your life

If you have access to the remote machine there is a CLI tool (vrlctl) from which you can activate the license server.
The login command is:

vrlctl online login <username> <password>

You can find more informtaion about the tool in the documentation

Ok thx that did the trick

However for all others that are searching for enabling it on a ubuntu server use this to get it to work:


sudo /usr/ChaosGroup/VRLService/OLS/vrlctl online login <user> <password>


just the command didnt work for me

on a sidenote my log file tells me this from 4 days ago, should i be worried?

Could not connect. (getaddrinfo EAI_AGAIN ols.chaosgroup.com:443)	A temporary failure in name resolution - this could happen with a flaky connection.
Dongle subsystem unavailable (connect ECONNREFUSED 127.0.0.1:30314)	The dongle module is not enabled
