I know there is a workaround for this but it should be readable without installing extra fonts.

Strange. Works fine for me - it should automatically point to alternative fonts when a certain one can't be found, should it not? (such as https://fonts.google.com/ Roboto Thin is very similar to Helvetica Neue Ultralight)Check out my (rarely updated) blog @ http://macviz.blogspot.co.uk/

Richard,
Sorry that you're having issues with your experience in our Docs site. If you're using an updated version of a common web browser (like Chrome or Firefox) all the fonts should be included. We've tried to standardize the UX between the Docs site and the main Chaos Group website and one of the ways we do that is by using a consistent font. The platform we use to serve up the documentation content gives us the option to use multiple fronts from similar families as backups if a user is missing a particular font from their system. Roboto is our preferred font because that is the one we use on the Chaos Group site but if you don't have that one, your browser should fall back to others like Helvetica Neue, Arial, and Lucida Grande. If none of those can be found on your system then we cannot guaranty you will be able to enjoy a favorable experience on our Docs site.
I recommend that you might want to look at including an additional font like https://fonts.google.com/selection?s....family=Roboto on your system to help provide a better UX whenever you bring up one of the Docs pages in your browser.
Best,
