  • A rope with displacement requires 6-12 GB RAM to render.

I've got a scene consisting of just a rope object with displacement and it requires between 6 and 12 GB of RAM to render. Happens with both Adv and RT. Is this normal and can I optimize this? If I were to put the rope into the main scene and render at final resolution I'll be out of RAM.

I use Vray's displacement modifier with all settings at default except for Amount. Render settings are also at default except for GI which is BF+BF. Resolution is 1600 x 1600. I thought about increasing the Edge length parameter to 8-10 px but I lose so much detail that I might just as well use normal/bump map.

    can you post this scene?
Ideally you would not use viewdependant in this case. If a large resolution render goes through you will surely get a lot of subdivs over the entire thing. In this case I think its better to use the fixed subdiv value, in world units.

Thanks, I'll try. If not, I'll post the scene.
