  • GI Noise

    I'm working on an interior animation and having a hard time with GI Noise. I'm resigned to using BF+LC for GI. Its odd, using the old method (precalc IR+LC) my GI would be super clean and direct light noisy. I'm getting opposite results now. I've tried a variety of different settings to get cleaner GI, and am at a loss. I've played with MSR, noise threshold, max subdivs, LC samples and size... The best result so far was increasing MSR to 20 from 10, but the GI is still too noisy. Attaching GI and Lighting pass.
    Any suggestions? I'm at a loss here.

      No tips for me?
      LC + BF has so few settings; I really don't know how to solve this.

        Seems like a scene dependent problem and not particular to vray itself.
        I would look at your lighting set up. Not sure how many lights you have what their settings are. In the past turning on probabilistic lighting and using standard lights would cause the whole scene to go grainy. Lights intersecting with geometry sometimes cause problems as well. IES lights sometimes do weird things. Turn off all your lights and go through them all turning on one at a time and see where the grain becomes noticeable.

          Yeah, I've done that. Get the same noise with only my dome. However, the noise isn't there when using IR+LC. Come on.....

            Well, that is always going to be the case. BF + LC is always going to be noisier, but also more precise. Two options, use a denoiser pass with BF + LC, don't use BF and use IR+LC.
            Hard to tell what the issue is without having the scene, but if you are getting direct light noise with IR, maybe not enough samples on the lights, reflective materials don't have enough samples.
            Also not sure what your settings for noise threshold are. Not sure what MSR is in reference to, minimum sampling rate / maximum sampling rate?

              Surely there is a way to get clean GI? As for IR+LC, I've been encountering an issue in the newer VRay releases where the render frames (loading precalc GI) actually take longer to render than when they calculate per frame. I've posted this to the forum as well, receiving no satisfactory explanation.
              I'm using MSR to refer to minimum shading rate.

                Are you using denoiser? My render times would triple without it.

                  Can it be applied only to specific channels?
                  What's the best way to learn how to use it? Specific thread?

                    It is just an element. In the Progressive mode, it applies it in real-time and in bucket mode, it'll apply it at the end of the render.

                            Render one frame of your animation. Adjust the setting of Denoiser in the Render Element panel and click the update. Do that until you are happy with the result.
                            Render your animation with those settings. Each frame will have an extra pass for the denoised image. You can also set a parameter to denoise other elements, I think reflection, gi and lighting will get denoised as well, though I don't remember.

                            Can you post the scene?
