  • DR connection timeout

    Hello

Using Max 2017 and Vray 3.60.03

I know this gets asked a lot but I'm not sure what else to try anymore. Basically have 5 vray and 1 Phoenix workstation licenses and 35 render node licenses. All machines connected on the same domain and all machines/render nodes work fine on Backburner.

DR works on a handful of machines (the rest just show as connection timeout) I have set the windows firewall to accept the default DR port 20204. Tried forwarding the port on some machines that dont work in the router but still not working.

The DHCP and DNS server runs on a windows server 2008 machine. Just wondering if this could be the issue?

Otherwise all machines can talk to each other and access network files etc and render fine via backburner just will not work on DR.

We have a wibu key dongle and the license server is on the same Windows server as above.

    Any help would be appreciated.

*Forgot to say all the render nodes are just using the spawner ran as admin and not registered as a service.

    Thanks

    Hello,

Can you please confirm if you are able to reach the render nodes on port 20204 by executing "telnet render_node_ip 20204" command from the workstation that initiates the DR (you might need to enable telnet from the Windows features to use it in cmd)
If you get "connection timeout" when you use telnet then the issue is probably related to the firewall. Please double check the firewall setup - if this is a Microsoft active directory domain some firewall rules might be overridden by group policy.

If you are able to reach the render nodes with telnet on that port then can you please provide more information regarding the "forwarding of the port to the router" that you configured. Also are these machines on the same subnet as the workstation and if not how are they connected.

Regarding the other information that you provided:
Backburner transfers the scene to the node and it renders locally which it means that the issues is probably not related to the V-Ray installation, and that the licensing settings are correct.
DHCP should not play a role here, and DNS will be used only if you use the Hostnames of the render nodes instead of the IP addresses.
Running the Spawner in the console should not be an issue.

      Hi Mihail

Thanks fot all the troubleshooting tips I've enabled telnet and done telnet 192.168.1.13 20204 (one of the render nodes) and it just sits there with a blinking cursor, I assume that means it has connected? I shall have a check on the Microsoft AD firewall stuff and then the nodes firewalls again.

Regarding forwarding the port on the router, well I opened those ports for specific IP address's on the network but seeing as the router does not control DHCP and filters the internet only I assume this won't be the issue.

        Hello,

If you still experience the issue afterwards can you send us the log from the V-Ray console in 3ds Max from the Workstation that initiates the DR and the vraylog.txt located in the %temp% directory of one of the render nodes that get the "connection timeout" error.
Please send them to support@chaosgroup.com and mention the the forum thread in the e-mail.

Just an update, I've had time to look through the domain setup (I didn't originally set it up). The DNS records were waaaaay out dated and the firewall settings all over the place. All working now with no problems

          Thanks for the help.
