Thank you for your help. I will try to render with max 2017 to see... But as I said I rendered all night in Corona and didn't get any blue screen. But It could be a combination of max and vray and some hardware causing the blue screens.

Also I upgraded to max 2018 cause I was having so many bugs in 2017 with CAT, Ornatrix etc. that I thought I would give it a try...

And after a night of testing Corona hair shader, I strongly prefer the results I was getting with the vray hair shader so I hope it will work in max 2017. So far I stopped using DR and it seems that it is not crashing in max 2017 without DR...

Funny, that's my overall opinion of Corona. At first it seems nice, but when you get right down to it, V-Ray does almost everything better. Before it was 'speed vs quality' and not is is 'ease of use vs quality'.

While I was going to write that so far max 2017 hasn't crashed, it just did crash, but not a blue screen this time, my system is still up , just max disappear without any error message while I was trying to stop a render region with DR. but it seems to be more stable than 2018 so far.

And yes Bobby, I'm still interested in Corona. Quite fast to learn coming from V-Ray. And well designed. But I can't replace V-Ray that I used for so many years in a single night! And I like the fact that it's free to use commercially for 45 days.

2017 just crashed again on this scene. I pressed render and then max just disapear without any message, no blue screen.

Btw V-Ray itself cannot cause a blue screen. A blue screen typically signifies some hardware issue or a driver issue.

Finally I found the source of my problem as well as the solution! And I'm not alone to have this problem. Anyone with a computer with the x299 chipset and a Skylake-X cpu (I have the i9-7980XE) will probably have a lot of blue screen while rendering with V-Ray and will simply not be able to do anything in after effects. Unless you are overclocking or adding more voltage to your cpu.

This is an insane error by Intel and a huge flaw in their new range of cpu. They simply don't have enough power by default to be able to sustain high load under certain condition (probably linked to the AVX instructions). My solution was to go in the bios and set my voltage to 1200mV. (be sure the mode is adaptive) just that and the blue screens stopped. But then I wanted to do some overclocking and I had the blue scren were back as soon as I changed some settings for overclocking so I had to add an offset to the avx (I set it to 5 for both avx offsets).

That's a pity to pay so much for a new system and have so many troubles because it doesn't seem to have been tested before launch...

After all did you find bios settings which makes the system stable when rendering with V-Ray.
It's strange though why it only crashes when V-Ray loads the system, did you find another software that also crashes the system?

Yes like I said I just needed to increase cpu voltage to 1200mV in the bios. And with After Effects it was even worse. Other people reported problems with photoshop too. Does V-Ray uses AVX instructions?

No, it uses SSE2 instructions.

Hi Dmtry, it seems to be all good now. But finally I was still getting a few crash after just increasing core voltage And also adding offset to AVX (I got 2 crashes in 2 days while I was flipping frames at the same time as rendering) and then I received a replacement computer from dell/alienware and I could see on that one they change the settings in the bios to overclock it and the voltage was set to 0 (I think it means auto adjust to the other settings) so I set the same settings on my first computer. Basically they were using a per core multipier of 47 on 2 cores and 42 on all the 16 other cores. vccin to 1830 corevoltage to 0 and no offset for avx. And since then I didn't get any crash on both of these computer and I spent at least 2 full nights rendering with those to date.

So those cpu are really unstable and need to be tweaked just the right way. But each bios is different so you have to find what works with your bios I guess.

Thanks, that kind of shitty I run all xeons, but planning on getting one such cpu for sims...hopefully it will be ok.
