if I remember correctly the "keep continuity" feature would properly weld the vertices on edges of the same smoothing group.
I am not able to reproduce this behaviour with V-ray 3.6.
I'm using a simple noise map as displacement on boxes, to make sure the faces are all in one smoothing group, I've added a smooth modifier, then a box mapping and then the displacement mod.
in both cases (use obj material and loading a texmap) it -should- weld the vertices on the edges if I'm not mistaking. Changing the "edge threshold" does not have an effect.
I've attached screenshots and a max file (max 2016).
