  • how to animate opacity without seeing the other side

I'm trying to animate opacity on some people to fade them in and out of a scene, but they look horrific during the fade because you can see the other side of their heads. Using a double sided mat does not work nor does backface culling.

Any ideas how to animate a fade without the horror?

Skip some steps and scroll down to Step 3 and Step 4. You'll get a hint there

Ahh interesting! That will almost work too... except my characters are behind glass in some parts of the scene! DOH :-\

I see in trace sets you can't select the object itself to exclude only itself from refraction rays, but this may be possible with maxscript.
I have not checked this out yet but will see if I get a chance later.

Morne, not sure if you have tried something like that before?

I'm going to try putting your 2d effect people into a scene Morne - client does not want 'shitty looking 3d people' so we are going to try shitty looking 2d people... with anima.
