  • Square Displacement

I have a simple displacement using a gradient, but it is coming out rounded. The gradient is black and white, so I am confused. I tried 3D and 2D, but both are rendering rounded. The image is 2D with a 2048 resolution.

have you tried setting your Blur in the texture coordinates of the bitmap to 0.01?

No, but I will. I did try with it off, but it didn't help.

No, that blurred it into almost nothing. Edge of .5 somewhat works, but it distroys my render times.

For the filtering I mean in the bitmaps settings, not the displacement modifier, those leave at default.
Can you upload the image and an example max 2016 file?
Filtering methods also make a big difference, what have you got it set to?

On another point is your bitmap gamma set to 1.0?

It only happens where the sun hits it. In shadow, all is good. When I render with a gray override you can see what is happening, it is chamfering the corners. I'll check gamma and filtering.

If you zoom and crop the displacement map to the same size as your image here what does it look like?

Same thing with a gradient, so I don't think gamma is the issue.

I had a texture filtering issue on a displacement a while ago, turning the filter value on the VRayDisplacementMod to 0.0 fixed it for me...at the time the checkbox wasn't functioning so I wouldn't trust that, fyi.

I'm not sure I get it, but you're saying gradient but you want a sharp line. How is a gradient going to make a sharp/squarish displacement. Might help to show your map.

Well in that case 2D displacement shouldn't even work, as this is a procedural map. If you want to go down the displacement road, just make a bitmap in photoshop so you can use 2D displacement, it will go a lot faster. The resolution of your map should be more or less the same as the resolution of the 2D displacement resolution. If you want to use that gradient ramp solid thing, you have to use 3D displacement which is going to be a lot slower if you want the same quality, and even then will give you a crappier result.

Also your geometry should be quite perfect, spline modelling isn't a good base for displacement geometry. In any case a simple displacement as this, I would use real geometry, Railclone or manually modelling (depending on what it is) seems a better approach.

I tried both a bitmap and the gradient. I ended up using the gradient with 2d displacement. Yeah, modeling is best and in the long run would have been a lot faster.
