  • object not rendering when displacement enabled

    Hi there,

I'm running into an issue which I had before in another project when rendering in a higher resolution.
At the moment I'm having the issue again in a new project.
Can you have a look into this issue?

    Max file: http://gofile.me/6lvtX/a4ZyfzePK

    Thank you

    Hi Pieter,

You haven't packed the whole scene. Also I can see that you are using beta 2, can you try with beta 3? If there is still an issue, pack the scene and send it to me.
If it was that easy, it would have already been done

      HI Peter,

Thanks for getting back to me, but the scene was already reviewd by your team regarding other issues.
It's containing a lot of assets guess it's more than 5-6Gb.
I've tested it with just the poly model.
It's appearing when rendering about 9000x6000 px
      3000x2000 works fine.

I'm using the beta 2 at the moment because of compatibility with other plugins.

Can you try with embree off? There was a bug when you go out of memory but there was no warning for it so part of the geometry was missing in the render. If that's your case, with embree off it should crash when you are out of memory.
If it was that easy, it would have already been done

            Hi Peter,

I'm encountering this issue again in another project...
Rendering without embree, the memory shoots to 46Gb which is about the max set under settings.
            After reaching this max crashes.
At the moment I've got a VrayDisplacementMod applied to my model.
Turning this off makes it render wo any problem.
Any other options I can try? I'll be testing with the latest version of the beta soon.

btw, can I still render this scene in the latest official & stable build? Are my models backwards compatible?
            Thank you
            Pieter

You can increase the edge length of the displacement and see if it helps. Increasing the Windows swap file size should also help.

              Best regards,

                Hey Pieter,

So the only problem here is that you are running out of memory. Try with higher values for "Edge length" in VRayDisplacementMod - this will make the displacement lighter.

Yes you can render your scene with those versions, there could be some little differences here and there but I can't tell you for sure without the scene.

Are you using 3D displacement or 2D. 46 gb for a scene like this is serious overkill. I've done more complex scenes with half the memory.
                  A.

                    Hi Ashley,

It's 3D displacement, for the brick (facade) mainly.
So it's possible that the object is too complex with the displacement enabled?

I've tried some different setups w displacement in the material/displacement as vray modifier/...

I'll try that to make the displacement lighter for the mean time.

As for the licensing... I'm still deciding what to do, as I just purchased my ui and render node licenses for all my nodes just a few months ago.
Keeping the render nodes at 3.6 won't be an option I guess

                      Thanks

Why are you using 3D displacement? What kind of maps are you using? If it's a bitmap, use 2D displacement, it's faster, lighter and better.
