  • displacement only on one side of a cube

    Hi,

i need to render some cutted ground surface element 3 x 3 m, where i have a soil displacement map on the top, and the side shall have another material ( best would be with different displacement).
I tried a couple of things, but don`t get the desired result. I attached an image with the options i tried so far. Nr. 5 gives the best result, but this won`t work for larger boxes, where i need the tiling to be on ( one cutted surface is 30 meters ).
Certainly i could create a huge 30 meter displacement map, but this doesn`t seem to be useable. Nr. 4 is near to what i want, but the ugly edge on the yellow side material is disturbing. Nr. 3 is looking good so far, but the displacement is equal on all sides and i need a different displacement map on these ones.
Does anyone have some ideas on how to solve this ?

    Thanks in advance

Look into using vray clipper to clip the edges so they are sharp.

      Hi Dimitry,

thanks for your reply on this, will give vray clipper a try on this, but is vraydisplacement limited like this, so you have to use some workarounds in this case or is there a "cleaner" solution ?

How about using stadard max displace on a very high subdivided plane to get some nice initial surface. Then just drag the border down, align the verts along the Z axix. Then u can use some further normal bump on top of the geometry to give it more detail?

You can give the different faces different material IDs and then use the VRayMultiSubTex texture to apply the displacement map just to one of the IDs, and leave the others black.

          Bets regards,

Well...tried Dimitrys approach with the vrayclipper and it works as expected...thanks for that....but the problem now are the missing uv`s on the clipped edge ?
I also tried Vlados suggestion, but the result still looks like number 4 in my examples, i get distorted edges at the rim to the vertical surface. vlado...could you please get back on this ? What i like to achieve is to have a surface material like rough sand on the top of the box and another material like soil on the sides , both with different displacement....this should be somehow achievable ?
            Thanks
