  • Wish item - V-Ray, real-time viewport

3ds max has the worst viewport ever made. Can chaos group make a pbr viewport for 3ds max? Can it be better than Maya’s viewport 2.0? Maybe it could be a real-time viewport which can toggle on off raytracing? It would act as a bridge between modeling in the viewport in real-time and raytracing. It should be great for modeling with wireframe but better materials and lighting. Look at this link and scrub through it

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l_7LB2KDqbs&t=603s

imagine we can have better than that with a vray viewport ?

Imagine how good hair grooming could be too

3ds Max and Maya viewport 2.0 both share the same OGS system for the viewport; not sure why it works better in Maya than it does in 3ds Max. It might better to direct this to Autodesk.

    Best regards,
    Vlado
I only act like I know everything, Rogers.

Yeah I already did - no luck, it’s autodesk so they don’t care. People have been asking autodesk for the past 18 months, maybe longer.

What's better in Maya? I know many Maya users who is asking to match 3dsMax's.
As Vlado said, it is exactly same tech.

If you want PBR mateerial i nviewport. Try Stingray shader or Physical material.

Everything about the maya viewport is better.

Imagine two people try and make the same dish which is made of the same ingredients....1 does a perfect job and the other does a really bad job.

Just because the ingredients are the same does not mean the end product is the same.

I'm probably going to move to maya. - Its way better for character work. There is simply no comparison between working on hair grooms in Maya as apposed to 3ds max. Dont worry - this is not Chaos Groups problem. I was just asking to see what the response was.

            Well.. that's your choice.

FYI, know a lot of Maya users who simply don't use Viewport 2.0 at all because of various issue.
Even at work, we started to revert back to legacy viewport.

At least, for 3dsMax, almost every one I know uses Nitrous.

May I ask what kind of work is being done at your work? - Character work is better in Maya

This is our Character reel. The reel is 100% 3dsMax including rigging.
We have done everything from digital double to animation, creature.

That's very good work!. - and very cool that its all 3ds max. I have a background in 3ds max - I both love and hate it with a passion. I will always be a 3ds max guy but there are some serious limitations for me. In particular is hair grooming in relation to the view-port. Once you use XGen with view-port 2.0 you never want to use anything else. I'm very glad I started learning Maya because there are just a few super important things that make it way more comfortable during the process of character look dev. I should really take the time to properly break my argument down with a comparison video otherwise it just sounds like I'm bitching in a way that nothing good can result.

Is it okay if I ask you what other companies are out there that use 3ds max, Ornatrix and V-Ray? - I am trying to build a list so I can freelance for many companies

I think most 3dsMax houses use Ornatrix.
AFAIK, Ornatrix is best solution for animated hair for 3dsMax
As you can see from our reel, all our work is animated character.

I'm sure xgen is great. But, I don't know what's the status for animation support of Xgen.
For us, animation.simulation support is the top priority and Ornatrix is proven solution for us.
I guess there is a reason for users to buy Ormatrix for Maya even though xgen is free.

You can visit Ornatrix for 3dsMax Facebook group for more info.
                    https://www.facebook.com/groups/ornatrix/.

The studio I know which uses Ornatrix other than us are Blur, Encore, Unit image, Plastix Wax, Realtime UK, Snowball, TAT production(They did feature film with 3dsMax/Ornatrix).

I hate Maya with a passion. I don't do character work at all, but for scenes with heavy geometry and thousands of parts, Maya Viewport 2.0 is pure sh.. Takes ages until you can do anything, after every viewport operation there is a severe lag of 2 or 3 seconds, selecting parts is a nightmare. Really, I can't say anything good about Maya Viewport 2.0

Thank you so much for your replies and the info ! I was taking to Marsel from Ornatrix and he is working on how ornatrix will be rendered in the viewport.

i wish there were tutorials on animation/simulation for Ornatrix in 3ds max

yeah I heard that maya viewport 2.0 is not good for heavy scenes but I’m a character artists and it does look incredible when hair grooming with xgen.

I block in my make my hair groom about 80% then recreate it in 3ds max with Ornatrix.

Have a quiet look at this viewport modeling and shading

What! you don't know the famous white tiger tutorial from our Danny?

You can also use Lucid dynamics from ephere to simulate dynamics for Ornatrix which is GPU accelerated.

ohhhhh sooo.....the answer must be way more simple than I realise. You just create a hair groom, then make geometric cards that represent the hair and do clot/hair hair simulation on them. Then simply make the hair groom adhere to the strips of simulated geo.

Also - that 3ds max viewport stuff is very good looking. How do you make your viewport do that? - do you need a Quadro GPU ? - Mine looks nothing like that and I have a 1080ti - put everything on max settings. I have lights with shadow maps also.

                              Thanks for the links

Have a look at this brah

                              https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qUIo3pf6Niw

Just skip through it very quickly till you see the shaders in viewport. - You can see things like glossiness maps and so on.

Also - About XGen. It has problems but has been used in productions.
Skip to the last part where you see the lock of hair.....XGen is stunning - Even Marsel from Ornatrix knows that the viewport feedback is a strong feature of Core XGen and IGS.
