  • Chromatic Aberration in Lens Effects

    Would it be lot of work to implement a post-render Chromatic Aberration effect in Lens effects panel? We usually add it in postproduction, but for quick, more realistic previews it would be as useful as bloom/glare effect. There is a diffraction parameter in Glare already, but it's a different thing. I don't find it in other render engines as well.

      I am sure you know what chromatic aberration is from physical standpoint. The existing simplest solutions are already implemented in screen-space, real-time gpu (directx games). In the fastest, non-physical form it is a minimal shift and blur applied to a separate R or B channel that grows towards the edges. In photoshop it is just like "zoom blur" added to R channel (red fringe) and B channel (blue fringe). Three sliders (R,G,B) + effect saturation is all required.       Of course, actual physical abberation can be already simulated in vray: DOF bokeh or dispersion applied to a glass lens object covering 3dsmax camera, but it is an overkill. Fast abberation would conclude all interesting organic lens defects already implemented in Vray (Bitmap bokeh, vignetting, lens distortion, lens glare).

        ArionFX has a quite solid solution that also takes into accout the strength falloff towards the edges of the lens.

            I have yet to see a lens that doesn't have any chromatic abberation. We usually get RAWs shot with incredibly expensive equipment, but you can always see some slight amount of CA in certain scenarios.

                I'd also like to add - saving presets in one group preset - similar to a magic bullet or other plug-in's "recipes".
