  • Vray Light with Opacity/Alpha

I use a lot of gradient ramps/soft boxes in my lights but often see the black areas of the light. Would be nice if there was an option to turn alpha on or off, so the black areas are not visible in reflections.

    Cheers.

This is allready possible. Take a max Composite Map, connect an Output Map to Layer 1 and whatever you want to blend, for example Softbox, Gradient etc. to Layer 1 Mask. Switch the Composite Map to Multiply or Addition and drag the Composite Map to the Map Slot of the Light. this will give you the desired effect. There are probabely more ways to do this. I agree it would come in handy to just have a switch in the light to multiply or add whatever is in the map slot of the Light.

Wow that worked perfectly, thanks! All these years of using Vray/Max and didn't think of that. Cheers!

You' re welcome. I ran into exactly this problem years ago and some Chaos Dude told me about the Composite Map.

If you are mainly using gradients, you can also use the Alpha from RGB Intensity checkbox from the Output rollout of the gradient. This works for other maps as well, but depending on the RGB intensity, the result may not be as expected. For gradients it works like a charm, though.
I do not like the composite map, because it is extremely slow to calculate.
