is it within the realms for the matte system to ignore shadows from itself and only receive shadows from visible objects?
this would avoid having to render out an 'alpha cleanup' pass to remove unwanted shadows cast by matte objects.

Well, newer versions have the "No GI on other mattes" option in the Object settings dialog for this purpose, I think it was in the 1.09 builds as well, although it didn't work quite properly there.

      Hi Vlado,

ah i tried that. wondered why it didnt seem to work.

this particular pass for the people isnt using GI at all. just a direct light and some falloff mapping to illuminate the people where the direct light doesnt hit them...so whats in the messy alpha is simply shadows being cast from the matte objects onto themselves.

should the 'No GI on other mattes' work with the direct shadows? I thought it only for indirect GI shadows etc...

Yes, it works for shadows too (VRay shadows and VRay lights only).
