  • Camera navigation like standard 3sMax camera => Ability to orbit, pan and move without having to change the tool

I was always wondering, why the Vray camera has such arduous unintuitive navigation.
I don't know any other software that forces you to switch between tools (orbit/pan/move...) in order to navigate your view.

How about giving the Vray camera just the same navigation as the standard 3dsMax camera has? At least optional…
    Thanks

    What do you mean?
EDIT: I ask as there are absolutely no differences between camera controls.
What you describe only ever happens with camera-less viewports (i.e. user/persperctive).

Hm, can you navigate a vray-camera with same hotkeys like 3dsMax cameras? (if you press „P“ the perspective camera, this is a camera that works as expected)

I have to use the camera tools in the lower left.

If there is a difference, maybe because I have Maya navigation enabled as default?

a perspective view is not a perspective camera, in max, unlike in maya.
It's just a view type (You can create a camera from it, however, with ctrl+c).
The rest of the controls for the camera are identical. In fact, the max physical camera *is* the v-ray physical camera, at least up until the point the code was given to Autodesk.

So it means you have the same navigation (with need to change between orbit an dolly camera tool)
          and it can‘t be changed?
So 3dsMax has this horrible cumbersome navigation deep implemented and that‘s why vray has it, too?

(I just would like to understand, which is the source of the problem)

Nah it's easy; just map keys/combos to the functions. I always hated those teeny weeny icons. Use shortcuts for everything to make your life easier

Thanks, I have assigned hotkeys. But I don’t feel comfortable with it... (maybe because I’m many more years used to Maya & other software, and so Max is for me the „alien“ )

im just using max, coming from maya and having to use dolly and orbit in an untargeted camera feels really bad and cumbersome...why the controls would be different to perspective camera is just odd

So just to confirm so i stop feeling like im going mad.... in perspective mode, you can zoom, orbit etc with mouse, mouse wheel and alt keys... but as soon as you change to a camera, these are disabled and i have to click different buttons or shortcuts?

haha. true. if you put it like that it is quite insane in max.
with untargeted cam I use walktrough mode (up arrow key should be the shortcut) with x and y rotation locked (archviz)

                    edit: x and z I guess, (tilt-shift lens)

i just ended up setting hotkeys for the zoom tool and pan camera mode .

Couldnt get a decent way for my wacom to zoom like in maya but stuck with these settings. Not ideal by a long way and coming back into maya felt like a cooling breeze on my angry red '3dsmax' face

p.s.: these work on Perspective views. Set the view up as you please, select the camera, press ctrl+c to line it up with the persp view.
