It would be a nice feature if in 3DSMax, the Vray Sun could be assigned time zone, latitude, longitude and north rotation offset same as it can be done in Vantage

You can use the standard 3ds max Daylight system and select "VraySun" from the drop down list. Hit the "Setup.." button after creation which takes you to the "Motion" panel that gives you all the controls you're looking for.www.dpict3d.com - "That's a very nice rendering, Dave. I had no knowledge of that and will 4 sure check that out! So one can create vray sun/sky via Max daylight system and setup and use vray sun/sky and all their respective vray controls per usual. Then from within the motion panel, the geo locate settings are there? I will give it a go. thanks!mark f.

Hi. I have tried using the 3DS Max Daylight and Sunlight system. I cannot seem to find any drop down that allows me to choose a vray sun? Not sure what I may be overlooking or doing wrong?mark f.

After you put the daylight system in place, make sure the daylight object is selected (not the compass) and go the Modify panel. From there it's the first drop down..."Sunlight"

Hi
I have a question or doubt.
How to use the DayLightSystem correctly?
I usually do this:
- create a DaylightSystem
- select Sunlight - VraySun
- Skylight - Deactivate
- And putting VraySky in EnvironmentMap
And when I checked LayerSpecular - looks not working
And when I to do:
- putting VraySky in VraylightDome
And checked LayerSpecular - looks working
Question: How to use the DayLightSystem correctly?
Thank you

I don't think a dome light with vray sky is meant to be used in conjunction with the daylight system. suggest you do not deactivate skylight and do not add dome light if you want to use daylight system.
If you do not need the geo locating features of the daylight system, then you can simply create vray sun. When it asks if you want to put vray sky into environment map choose yes. Then, if you want to use dome light versus the Max environment map, create a vray dome light and instance the sky from the environment map slot into the dome light. Good practice to also then instance that vray sky into the material editor and make sure it is using the vray sun as it's node. Hope this may help.mark f.

But can you give me answer please:
- Why when I use VraySky in EnviromentMap - I haven't LayerSpecular. And when I putting VraySky in VrayLight (dome type) - I have LayerSpecular.
And how shoude it be? ( to get more realistic/correct results)
Because I think when I have LayerSpecular - it's normal
Thank you

I am not sure what render elements may or may not be generated when using the two different configurations you indicate.
AFAIK using vray sky in the environment map should produce the same results as using vray sky in the vray dome light.
You can also instance the vray sky into the vray gi environment map slot in the render settings vray environment section.
https://docs.chaosgroup.com/display/...nment+Settings
and also instance the vray sky into the reflection/refraction slot in the same vray gi environment section.
I believe these three possibilities have a hierarchy. First upon creating the vray sun you select yes to having the sky put into the Max environment map. Then if you instance that vray sky into the vray environment per the link above, that supersedes/ overrides the Max environment. Then if you create a vray dome light that now supersedes/overrides the Max environment and the vray gi environment.
I recommend you instance the vray sky into the material editor and check to be sure it is using the vray sun as it’s node. This is important to check when using the vray sky in the vray dome light.
Hope this may help.

But it seems to me that the question remains open with regard to the layerSpecular =)

Yes I recognize that remains unanswered. I am not familiar with encountering layerSpecular. Is that a render element you are referring to or ……?mark f.

OK. I'm not 100% certain of the workflow you are using. I set up a simple scene with a box on a plane. Added vray sun/sky. Said yes to sky in Max environment. Made Render elements active and added VraySpecular as a render element. Rendered scene using a vray camera and saved render as .exr. Opened in photoshop and it has the VraySpecular layer. NOTE: this is different than the layerSpecular terminology that you are using.
I then created vray dome light and instanced the vray sky into the dome light map slot. Than I instanced that into the material editor where I assigned the vray sun as the node. See screengrab02. I rendered it and saved as .exr. Same result the file has the VraySpecular layer included.
You may be using the render elements incorrectly or...? The render element should be VraySpecular versus layerSpecular. Again, there is a lot about your workflow that is unknown.
Trying to be helpful here but maybe someone with more in depth usage of render elements knowledge can help more than me.mark f.
