    its possible that save rgb checked and separate render channels unchecked ends up saving just rgb result. I think it used to work like this in the past.

      Yep, but that doesn't save the REs in their denoised state, and the effect result again is back to the original problem where the VFB is denoised and the saved file is only partially denoised, like I hadn't set this up to do individual channels.

        Well, I got somewhere - I have re-composited it in AE using the saved channels in the EXR which *do* seem to save as Denoised. It's...a bit of a pain to setup, and I wish it'd just save what you're seeing in the VFB out without this nonsense, but there you go, it can be done.

          ok, I checked everything again. looks like a bug. couldn't find a way around it.
          denoiser comes back up at render end and it shouldn't. it should stay off:

            I really hope they can fix this - or at least add back in the "denoise channels individually" option back in, as that makes all this work correctly. I'm unclear on why it was removed.
