  • USD import object+material for editing inside 3ds

    Hi,
We would like the ability to import/unpack objects and v-ray materials from usd files, so that they could be tweaked inside 3ds max without losing the material assignments etc.
If its possible to get xform animations with it too, that would be awesome.

Is this something that's on the roadmap?

I am skeptical too, but I doubt we will be able to use USD much if we're not able to edit/override usd content within 3dsmax.
Even a one way import would suffice, as being able to edit the materials and mesh is kind of essential.

As I'm just starting to use USD I don't really know what is must have yet.

But here are some things that I could imagine would come in handy,
    1. Getting to chose what Variant to render
    2. Choosing what Purpose it should render (for preview rendering with proxy for heavy scenes/models)
    3. Scaling the the model to match the 3ds max units, could be a checkbox? (I'm probably going to start a new thread about this)
    4. Being able to assign new materials to primitives in the USD hierarchy.
    5. Setting visibility of primitives
    6. Reading primvars for use in shading
    7. Good support for USD instancing (have not tested this yet, it might be here already)

    Ordered in no particular order.

      Thanks for your feedback!
If it was that easy, it would have already been done
