  • Translucent shader or Backlight plugin for VRay!? When?!

Sorry to be so insistent on this one but I think it's a must!
Is it so dificult to make a plugin like these???
Please don't tell me that Vray can do something like this by default because it's can't and the backlight plugin doesn't work in Vray.
Any chance you could take some time on this Vlado??
    Thanks

It is possible to implement this, we just need to find the time for it. It needs to be a separate material, and not an addition to the already complicated VRayMtl, so it requires a little more work.

    Best regards,
    Vlado

      Hello Vlado!
I'm sorry to know that it's not a trivial task..
Isn't there a simpler way?? Remember that backlight plugins works as a map to use in the self illumination slot.
Well...I realize that you should know these things work better than anyone but...you never know...maybe you missed something
and it will do so good for me greeneries

Is it not the same as the translucent shader of the strandard max material?

          Hello!
Isn't architectural visualization quite dominant here??
          Lots of trees...lots of leaves...curtains...lampshades...
Isn't tranlucency and SSS a little no much for this kind of stuff???
Well...Just to give a little enfasis on this...

Well...just so you don't forget this...

            I have a question...
The backlight plugin is a map that represents the direct light hiting the oposite face side right?? Is that só dificult to implement in vray??
Another question is about the "fast sss" material that I read in this forum..
Will it be fast enought to use it in thousand of leaves in hundreads of trees??
            Thanks

              RSF,

I agree with you that this is a much needed shader in Vray! Hopefully this will come with Vray 1.5. Vlado can you comment on this or if there will be a solution to the backlight issue?

Is there a current work around that doesn't create massive render times? I want to create a forest scene with light shinning through the forest canopy and without this effect it is going to lose all sense of realism.

Agreed that it needs to be a part of the VRayMtl, but max's translucency shader works fine with VRay, if my memory serves me right that is. I seem to remember using it for grass in the past.

Would a falloff map (shadow/light) in the self-illumination slot work as another workaround? I haven't tried, but it might.

                  Hello!
                  I don't think there's a workarroud for this!
Even Vlado said there was a plugin for this but I really don't think so!
Neither translucent shader nor the backlight plugin work on vray.
Take a look at this link:

You might be pleased to know that newer builds do include a 2-sided material for simulating thin translucent surfaces like paper, leaves etc.
