For flyarounds/walkthroughs that this type of camera would be useful. Basically, a dome would tell Vray that everything within a dome's area would be rendered in 360 degrees. Then it would output to a VRML type of format which would allow you to explore the area within that dome's boundaries.

It doesn't allow you to fly around a specified area in 3D space, only look around for one point.

There's no doubt there would be long render times. Minimum of eight times a normal render length. But you're thinking in final rendered stills which I wasn't describing.
A way of thinking about this is looking at the scene as if you were using an Irradiance Map viewer. There wouldn't be any stills. There would be several Irradiance maps - probably a total/minimum of eight shots (all the major axis) which you can trace light from the path of light to the camera. These would be composited together to give you an entire picture of the IRmap from all angles.
Currently, Vray will calculate IRmaps from specified camera directly to scene. Other angles do not contain data unless a separate pass from that angle is rendered. If you've used an IRmap viewer, you will note that you are able to zoom in and around a particular scene.

Renderings don't work that way. A rendering is 2D information unless you count point clouds such as irradiance maps. Even spherical images are still 2D images. What you CAN do is do a texture bake and then use that on the model itself. That woudl make the VRML you are looking for. BTW... how uses VRML these days anyway?

Renderings may not work that way - they will work that way some day. VRML was just an example and the IRmap is just an example. Most people dont use VRMLs cause of load times, added plugins, lack of usefulness, and their cartoony appearance.
On the other hand, there's a whole generation of gamers who play online in a 3D environment that would beg to differ. I am almost certain that RTRE types of enviroments also have their appropriate usefulness.

Use texture baking, then export to VRML, same as any other "realtime" solution, like for instance, video games.
you mean full baking or lightmapping?
if lightmapping: you know a solution to export multitextured vrml directly from max?
